“Presbyterian Assembly Votes To Drop

Homosexual” and “Chastity” Ban On Clergy

“The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), bitterly divided over sexuality and the Bible, set up another confrontation . . . over its band on ordaining non-celibate gays and lesbians. The denomination's General Assembly, meeting in San Jose, CA, voted 54% to 46% . . . to drop the [constitutional] requirement that would-be ministers, deacons, and elders live in 'fidelity within the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman, or chastity in singleness'.”

“The proposed change requires approval from a majority of the nation's 173 Presbyteries, or regional church bodies – a year-long process that has proven to be a barrier to similar efforts in the past . . . the assembly also voted to allow gay and lesbian candidates for ordination to conscientiously object to the existing standard . . .” The action “supersedes a ruling from the church's high court, issued in Feb. (2008) that said there were no exceptions to the so-called 'fidelity and chastity' requirement.”

The new constitutional amendment does not single out any specific sexual conduct standard. According to a news release, “The advisory committee on the Constitution has repeatedly said that clearing the way for ordination of sexually active gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered Presbyterians requires(d) the deletion” of the former constitutional prohibitions.

In what this writer believes was a “hypocritical” action, the same assembly voted by a 77-33% margin “to preserve the church's definition of marriage as a covenant between 'a man and a woman,' rather than changing it to 'two people'.”

Genuine Bible-believers within this denomination should immediately remove their membership. The writer also suggests that such saints study the New Testament to see what it says about infant baptism – NOTHING is the answer, since the New Testament solely prescribes immersion for believing converts – Acts 2:42, 8:38, Romans 6:3-4.                       -- The Fundamentalist Digest, August, September, 2008
