Roman Catholicism Into The Marvelous Light Of The Gospel Of Jesus Christ

THE TESTIMONY OF PASTOR HO SOO KAM

My father was born on the island of Hainan, China. As a student he was first in the provincial examinations and was destined to become a Confucian scholar. However, civil war and revolution overturned his dream forever. He became a communist guerilla fighting against the Kuomingtang nationalist government troops.

In 1936, he wanted to join Mao Tse Tung’s communist Long March across the length of China. He could not breach the nationalist blockade and had to flee from certain execution to Singapore. My mother joined him in 1939 just before the Japanese invasion and the outbreak of war in the Pacific. Eleven of my brothers and sisters died in the civil war in China and Japanese invasion.

I was born in 1948 just after the Second World War. I went to a Roman Catholic school where I was taught that outside the Roman Catholic "church," there is no salvation. In my mind, the equation was jut this: in politics, communism was the truth, and in religion, Roman Catholicism was the truth.

I wrote many reviews on the books and poems of Mao Tse Tung, the Chinese communist leader and Ho Chin Minh, the North Vietnamese communist leader, which were all published in the local newspapers.

My father died a bankrupt and went into a Christless eternity in the lake of fire when I was 19 years old. Life was empty without the saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God. In 1976 when I was 28 years old, a Christian lady friend invited me to attend a gospel meeting. The speaker was a Dr. Kim from South Korea. Dr. Kim started his preaching by recounting how both his parents and all his brothers and sisters were killed by the North Korean communists.

Dr. Kim said he became a very bitter person until the glorious gospel of the love of Christ was preached to him. After he was saved, he was able to forgive the North Korean murderers of his family. As Dr. Kim preached Christ and Christ crucified, tears flowed down my face as I beheld that night with the eye of faith the lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the world.

God the Holy Spirit convicted me that I was a lost sinner. I needed a Saviour more than anything else in this world; and Christ is the only saviour for sinners. The grace, the love and the mercy of Christ were all summed up in his all sufficient precious blood shed on the cross to wash away all my sins. Christ’s sacrifice on the cross is the only sacrifice acceptable to God. Christ’s garments of salvation and his robe of righteousness is totally sufficient for any sinner (Isaiah 61:10)

When Dr. Kim asked those who wanted to receive Jesus Christ as their personal saviour to come forward, I literally ran forward, fell on my knees and received Jesus Christ as my personal saviour. That was the greatest day of my life, May 14, 1976. I was born again. I left the meeting hall rejoicing in Christ Jesus.

After I was saved, I have three great desires everyday. To read the Bible, to distribute gospel tracts and to talk to my saviour in prayer. I just wanted to tell the whole world of the free gift of God in His dear Son. That salvation is not by sacraments; salvation is by grace through faith in Christ Jesus alone. It is not of works lest any man should boast (Ephesians 2:8-9).

After I was saved, the first person to whom I preached the gospel to was my aged mother. After telling her a few times that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and only Saviour for sinners, she was gloriously saved. With her own bare hands, she removed and burnt all her Chinese idols. She became a prayer warrior until the day she went to be with the Lord. That day she realized that communism and Roman Catholicism are false.

In 1981, I obeyed the call of God to stand for the purity of the Word of God in the English language and for the testimony of Jesus Christ; and to start a Bible-believing congregation. A very small congregation was started and I have served as the pastor without salary for more than 25 years now.

All these years my wife and I have taken various odd jobs and occupations to find a living for our four children, and to distribute and send out materials everyday telling people that the Bible is the Word of God and Jesus is the only way to heaven.

Whenever I can afford the postage, I will send out gospel materials to people in many Asian countries. I obtain the names and addresses of these people from international pen-pal lists including prison pen-pals. O send out thy light and thy truth.

I married late and still have 3 children going to school although I am 58 years-old with a heart condition. May people have told me that I look more like a man in his seventies. This is probably due to the long years and long hours of labor in earning a living and at the same time laboring in the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. The verse in Psalm 126:5 has great meaning for me. "They that sow in tears shall reap in joy." My effort is small because of lack of resources.
