6:1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,

2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

Matthew Henry’s Commentary is typical of commentaries. He says:

"The sons of God (that is, the professors of religion, who were called by the name of the Lord, and called upon that name), married the daughters of men, that is, those that were profane, and strangers to God and godliness. The posterity of Seth did not keep by themselves, as they ought to have done, both for the preservation of their own purity and in detestation of the apostasy. They intermingled themselves with the excommunicated race of Cain."

In other words, he identifies the daughters of man as the profane descendents of Cain and the sons of God as the descendents of Seth. However, he is merely following the popular thinking of Theologians.

The words, "sons of God," appears only four times in the Old Testament—three times in Job and the one place in Genesis 6. It is quite obvious in the three places in Job that the sons of God are not human, but supernatural, angelic beings.

Job 1: 6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.

On what occasion did humans appear in the presence of God, along with Satan? Never!

Job 2:1 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.

Job 38: 4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.

5 Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?

6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;

7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Again, it is obvious that no human was present when God created the heaven and the earth. If the words, "sons of God," appears only four times and three of those are obviously angels, then why would the fourth be anything else?

Furthermore, the children born unto them were called "Nepha- lims," which means "fallen ones." They are the ones referred to in Jude 6, "And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day."

They are also mentioned

in II Peter 2:4

For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly.

Even the context in verse 5

is Noah’s day!

Then there is always the question—"How could angels cohabit with humans?" Why not? We have been brainwashed into thinking unscripturally about angels. The usual Scripture that is used is Matthew 22:29

Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.

30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.

The key here are the words, "as the angels of God in heaven." It does not say that angels are sexless! The two that went to Sodom in Genesis 19 are readily identified by the Sodomites as men. Angels are always identified as men —never women or children.

Genesis 19:1 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;

2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.

3 And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.

4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:

5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.

For Bible Believers, this should settle the question as to "Who were the sons of god in Genesis 6?" Let the Bible answer the question rather than Theologians and commentaries. ٱڤ
