The
Fear Of The Number "13"
By DR. PAUL E. HEATON, Ph.D.
BIBLE BAPTIST CHURCH
3297 EUCLID AVENUE
LUPTON, MICHIGAN 48635
Introduction
The word triskaidekaphobia (Also spelled tridecaphobia, tredecaphobia, triakaidekaphobia or triskadekaphobia!) is a 25 cent word that means, "the fear of the number thirteen." A word that is "kin" is Arithmophobia which means, "the fear of numbers."
While folks will try to tell you that they are not "superstitious" it is amazing to listen to them talk. These same folks will tell you they don't believe that "13" is bad or that it is an "unlucky" number and yet many of them will check their phone bills, checkout counter receipts, etc., to see if the number 666 shows up.
"Oh," they say, "it's in the Bible you know!" And the number 13 isn't? You will be led to believe that the number 13 is "normal" by these lazy saints who only believe what they are told, not what they have studied.
Many years ago I kept track of the chapter and verse thirteens as I did my daily Bible reading. I kept three lists, one for places where the inference was bad, another for those that indicated something good and finally, one for those that didn't seem to be either bad or good.
When I finished I averaged the totals and found that about 80% were bad and another 15% were good and the remaining references were neutral. Someone else might do it and not class them the same, but I don't believe it would be that much different.
It will be seen, in a limited way, that the numbers 6, 18 and 39 are connected to the number thirteen as well as the multiples of those numbers. We would also find the letter "x" connected to the number thirteen.
While I won't spend much time, if any, on the letter "x" outside of the information located in Appendix "A", you can be sure that it is tied together with these numbers. I will show briefly that the number thirteen is accepted by the world to have the same implications whether they believe it or not.
The purpose of this short treatise is NOT to prove that I am RIGHT, it is simply to show that God's Word is correct in it's definition of words, numbers and anything else it defines. I shall simply present some facts and information that I have collected over the years for you to read. What you do with it is your decision.
Before moving on into the text let me acknowledge that I have not collected all this material by myself. I really can't say how much of it has come from other sources, but I must confess a good portion has no doubt been collected from reading other books, listening to a message, etc.
As I said previously, I once kept track of the verse thirteens while reading through the Bible, and some of this was noted then. From wherever I collected it, I am just thankful that many others took the time to write it down, teach it or preach it. Hence, you are receiving the benefit of the efforts of many. Thus, you can see that though my name appears as the author, I'm basically only the collector!
Numeromania
There are no doubt many who believe that folks who spend their time studying numbers are infected with arithomania, or the compulsive desire to "count things." The study of numbers has always been a part of man's being. The meaning of those numbers has always haunted him as well. This is probably the key to lotteries and gambling casino's.
You have surely heard someone say, "That's probably your lucky number." Many a man has bet his paycheck on the "numbers game" and lost it! Numbers are still played in most every factory in America. Men bet on the football and baseball scores, and who knows what else. State lotteries are the rage of the age and many of our states now permit casino gambling. What all this amounts to is, playing the NUMBERS!!!
Where did all this get started? Well, I can't say that I can give you an exact time or place, but I can tell you in a broad sense, it started with the Bible. God asked Abram to count (tell) the stars (Genesis 15:5) and as you know he couldn't. Yet God promised him a family that large.
If you had been a betting man you might have said, "Right, and how many wives do I get!" But not Abram, he just believed God! It's quite obvious that Abram understood that God was quite able to do as he pleased with numbers and figures. [By the way, according to Psalms 147:4, God also has them named.]
At the end of the Bible, God once again asks someone to "count". The Psalmist asked God to "teach us to number our days" which was requested for wisdom's sake, not for personal gain. (90:12)
In Revelation 13:18 (We'll speak of this later.) God says, "Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast:" and have you ever noticed that NO one says, "Well, you're just making something out of nothing."
Everyone, even those who do not profess to be Christians, knows something about the number 6 and the combination of 666.
No doubt among the most monumental works on the subject of numbers is a book by E.W. Bullinger entitled Numbers In Scripture. While no one probably agrees with all of his conclusions you will be pretty hard pressed to disprove them. As I said at the beginning of this chapter, the place to start, concerning numbers, is with the Bible. Bullinger comments this way on that thought.
We now come to the Word of God, which is the greatest, and, to us, most important of all God's works. May we not look for, and expect to find, numbers used not only with the same wondrous design, but, here, with significance also? If there be design, there must be significance. [Kregel Publications, Grand Rapids, MI, 1973, page 20.]
Concerning the number thirteen, Dr. Bullinger states the following.
As to the significance of thirteen, all are aware that it has come down to us as a number of ill-omen. Many superstitions cluster around it, and various explanations are current concerning them.
Unfortunately, those who go backwards to find a reason seldom go back far enough. The popular explanations do not, so far as we are aware, go further back than the Apostles. But we must go back to the first occurrence of the number thirteen in order to discover the key to its significance. [Ibid., page 205.]
This, as you will see, will be the starting point of our search, the first occurrence of this word or number.
I am sure that you are aware that many, among the ranks of the saints, believe that those who would take time to study such things, as the meaning of the number 13, are crazy or maniacs!! Most are of the opinion that if they didn't learn it in Bible school, or it is not believed by the "fellowship" or it was never supported by Harry Ironside, Oliver Greene, A.B. Simpson, Charles Spurgeon or any other famous preacher of the past or the present, it just can't be true.
The Apostle Paul had some of the same problems in his day. Even Peter stated that some of what the Apostle Paul wrote was "hard to be understood." (2 Peter 3:16) Thank God the brethren weren't in control of editing Paul's materials. We might have ended up with about 6 books rather than 14!
As I said previously, it was not my intention to make a thorough study on this subject. Just a short thesis. Now, let's proceed into our study with great anticipation of either renewing our present knowledge of the subject; adding to the present knowledge; or just learning these truths for the first time.
Random Thoughts!
Hollywood has been producing pictures for years dealing with the numbers 6 and 13 as well as the letter "X". A television series called "The X-Files" has run for 6 seasons (1999) and deals with "aliens". Another T.V. series was the Munster Family. They lived, if you remember, at 1313 Mockingbird Lane.
Then there were such movies as "Dementia 13", "Thirteen At Dinner", "Thirteen Ghosts", "Apartment On The 13th Floor", "Rosemary's Baby", "The Omen", "The 13th Warrior" (Based on the book Eaters Of The Dead!!) and "Friday The 13th", which is a series still shown weekly on cable and satellite television. (There were a total of 72 programs in this three season series.)
"The 13th Floor" a computer chip "virtual reality" reproduction of the city of Los Angeles as it was in 1937, involving murder, mystery, etc. In 1935 Alfred Hitchcock produced a movie called "The 39 Steps" (That's 3 times 13!!!). It was a spy, mystery movie which was remade in 1958 and again in 1978. I could no doubt list others but you probably know them better than I do!!
Speaking of Hollywood brings to mind the television and then the monitor for your computer. I recently read where the normal color display is 256 colors. However, 40 of those colors are set aside for system resources leaving 216 colors. That is, 6 values of red, 6 values of blue and 6 of green. Which when times by themselves equals 216! This is called, "the safe palette." What does it mean? I don't know, but there it is again, 6x6x6.
The date 1776 should ring a bell in the mind of the history buffs. That was the year of our independence from the King of England. The last two numbers of that date, 7 and 6, added together equals, 13! The flag of independence had 13 strips and 13 stars which of course represented the 13 colonies who had "rebelled" against the King. (We'll talk about the connection to rebellion later.)
The flag of the confederate states, during the Civil War, had a big blue "X" through a red background and had 13 stars that were sown into the "X". The first Navy Jack (flag) had 13 red and white strips with a "snake" in the middle and the words, "Don't Tread On Me" on it. Count the letters in that motto, there are -- 13!
How about the phrase "The spirit of 76"? Count them, 13 letters/numbers. Try the statement "The 13 colonies." Yep, there are 13 letters/numbers there. The 18th (666) amendment (prohibition) lasted 13 years, from 1920-33 and was "rebelled" against and repealed by the "liquor heads" of our government.
How about the Great Seal of the United States! Talk about connected to thirteen. The pyramid has 13 layers, the shield has 13 stripes, the eagle carries 13 arrows in his left talon and the constellation over the eagle has 13 stars.
The Latin phrase" "Annuit Coeptis" has 13 letters. (Which means, "It Favors Our Understanding.) The Latin phrase "E Pluribus Unim" has Ä right, 13 letters. (Which means, "Out Of Many One.)
Who can forget, "Remember the Alamo"? Hardly any red blooded American can forget it, and NO Texan had better ever forget it!! Did you know that that siege lasted 13 days!
Here's an interesting tidbit of information about our earth and its moon. We are told that the moon orbits the earth 13 times per year. Nope, I don't know why, and probably neither does any astronomer. Course, we all know that God made it that way we just might not know why.
A check with the major airports finds that many of them do not have a gate thirteen at all, or at least not in all the terminals. Detroit Metro Airport has no gate thirteen in concourse D and E. The gates go from D10, D11, D12 and D14.
Dallas Fort Worth has several gate thirteens and so does San Francisco International Airport. However, O'Hare International Airport (Chicago) has no gate thirteen in Terminal 2. The gates are numbered E11, E12 and E14. A Check with Memphis International Airport (Tennessee) shows that there are NO gate thirteens!
I'm not sure why some have them and some don't. I suspect some of it might be the airlines who use those terminals, or it might even be the designer. Who knows, maybe it is just the average. Some good, some bad, some neither! I'm not a frequent flyer, as a matter-of-fact I don't fly much at all, but I'm told that most airlines don't have a 13th row in their seating charts.
On the subject of airlines I'm sure you remember the ill-fated flight of Apollo 13. However, did you know that because NASA doesn't believe that 13 has an unlucky, bad, etc., implication, they launched this flight at 13:13 hours on Wednesday April 11th 1970.
On Friday, April 13th an oxygen tank ruptured and forced the trip to be aborted. Still not convinced, some eleven years later they scheduled a Friday the 13th launch that had to be aborted due to an oxygen leak. Of course it was all just pure coincidence.
Speaking of Friday's that occurs on a day marked the 13th, while many would say, "It's no big deal!" that was not the case with Steven Spilberg, the Hollywood movie maker. When he discovered that the debut of his movie "Hook" was on a Friday the 13th he had it moved back to the Wednesday of that week.
Out West there is a highway numbered 666. It starts in New Mexico, off Interstate 40, and goes north into the southwest corner of Colorado and turns west into Utah and there connects to state route 191. Its length is 196 miles, as figured on the map. If you take the statehood admittance numbers of each state and add them together it totals 130! [New Mexico is the 47th, Colorado is the 38th and Utah is the 45th.]
Highway 666 is said to have the highest fatality rate of any highway in the U.S. for it's length. I don't have statistics to prove that statement, I am just telling you what I read. It is commonly called "The Devil's Highway". The Navajo Indians believe that the number "6" is a bad or evil number unless you know how to write it. They believe it is connected to evil spirits or the devil.
Here is an interesting piece of information about the U.S. Constitution. At one time there was a 13th amendment to the United States Constitution. However it is "missing". It reads as follows.
If any citizen of the United States shall accept, claim, receive, or retain any title of nobility or honor, or shall without the consent of Congress, accept and retain any present, pension, office, or emolument of any kind whatever, from any emperor, king, prince, or foreign power, such person shall cease to be a citizen of the United States, and shall be incapable of holding any office of trust or profit under them, or either of them.
Whether it is "missing" as in; somebody didn't like it or just because those in office at the time voted it down, is still being debated by each side (The extremists vs. the other guys!). [If you wish further information see Appendix "B".]
M.A. Radford, in his book entitled The Encyclopedia Of Superstitions, notes that in most French towns you cannot find a home with the number 13 or a French Motel room that is numbered 13. A high rise builder in Canada says that in the 23 years that he has been building he has NOT seen a number 13 on an elevator control panel.
He says that buildings that go over the 13th floor never list such on the drawings. He states that it is easier to get permits and the cost is cheaper!!! He admits that there IS a thirteenth floor, it just isn't marked such.
Did you ever wonder why there are 52 cards in a deck of playing cards? That is 4 x 13. In the game of hearts the queen of spades (black) will get you 13 penalty points. One of the names given to this pack of cards was "The Devil's Bible." Another name it was known by, in the 17th century, was "The Devil's Picture Book."
It is interesting to note that history attributes the invention of playing cards to King Charles of France who was said to be insane. The invention of these cards is said to have been in 1392. The deck of cards is connected with NOTHING that is good but everything that is EVIL.
Along this line of cards is the ones used by those who supposedly can tell the future. In the Tarot deck is a trump card known as the Death Card. It's probably not surprising to you that it is numbered, 13!
In the old west we used to hang people for crimes they had committed. [Now we house them, give them rights and release them so they can commit the crimes again.] it is said that "Friday" was known as "hanging day" and hence a connection to the number 13. A bit of trivia here might be interesting. the gallows had 13 steps going to the platform and the hangman's noose has 13 loops preceding the slipknot.
Have you ever noticed how when a child reaches the age of 13 they often become rebellious! While this is not always true I would be willing to say it happens about 85 percent of the time.
There is an internet site called "The 13th Dimension" which has several areas or stages in it. There is the "Dragon World", "Doomed Land" and several others which I'll not take time to mention.
The "Dragon World" has kingdoms. The first kingdom is ruled by Astygalo who is called the "evil one" who if described as "most cruel." Sound like any person you've read about in your Bible? The second kingdom is good, of course, and is ruled by an "old man" who is good and fights evil. (Hum, seems like I've heard about an "ancient One" who is good [Matthew 19:17] and fights evil.) And by now you should have guessed that the third kingdom is "neutral". [It is "oriental" in nature for some strange reason!]
The "Doomed Land" is a land run by...by... you guessed it, demons. My, my isn't there anything new under the sun?
A Look At The Obvious
The Bible is NOT a science book but it is the book on science. As it is NOT a math book it is the book that builds the foundation for math. The Bible determines what the foundation of a truth is and then men either build on that fact, the truth, or else they attempt to destroy that truth with their "theories."
Evolution is a prime example of this very thing. God declares "In the beginning . . ." yet gives us no date as to when. he just assumes that we will by faith accept the truth that God has always been and that He did the creating.
Man accepts the truth of "no beginning" but comes up with a trillion years and a Big Bang and then a solar flare that gets a sudden cooling and water develops and a tadpole forms and then develops into a lesser intelligent primate and eventually a homosapian (man) who ends up building universities where the "cream" of the primates, a biology professor with a Ph.D., celebrates his graduation from a tadpole to a human by teaching about his ancestors (relatives, cousins, etc.) who are incarcerated in the local zoo.
I realize that the previous is a "spoof" on what the evolutionists teach, but I suspect that what I've said is just as valid as the fairy tales they tell.
A truth that will help anyone in the study of the scriptures is to mark first mentions and note the definitions that go with them. That is, when we come across a word or truth for the first time in the Bible, the definition given is going to be the way it will be interpreted or defined almost without exception from then on.
The following is just a sample of some places in the Bible where the word or number "thirteen" appears either in a verse, or as a chapter and verse marking. I kept the comments simple and brief. Surely you understand that there is MUCH more to be said in some of these verses along with the fact that there are many other places which are not brought to light in this small work.
Old Testament
Genesis 3:13
And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
Here we find the woman "blaming" the serpent for her part in the fall of man.
Genesis 4:13
And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.
Cain is receiving his punishment for the "murderous" act he has committed against his brother. Whether it has anything to do with it or not, I just thought you ought to know that Cain's name means, "acquisition, fabrication or possessed." Did you ever hear anyone say, "Boy, did we raise cain last night!? Is that a good or bad comment?
Genesis 12:13
Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee.
Here is an interesting verse in the list of thirteens. A prophet of God is asking his wife to "lie." Just for information sake, there are 26 words in this verse which is 2 x 13.
Genesis 13:13
But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.
The first time we have a combination of thirteens in the Bible! This verse, as you can see, contains thirteen words and it also contains the first mention of the words sinners in the Bible.
Not only that, these sinners are "sodomites." Hey, not only were they "sinners", they were wicked. Another nail in the coffin for the word "thirteen." So, we get two definitions here.
The first is that this number will be connected with the fallen nature of man and secondly that the sin of sodomy is a wicked and rebellious act against God! How's that for Bible doctrine!
Genesis 14:4
Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
The first time the word "thirteen" occurs in the Bible is in this verse and it is connected with "rebellion." By following this fact throughout the Bible one learns some tremendous truths and facts not only about the number 13, but also about the act of rebellion.
As a matter of information, the word "thirteen", in some form or another, occurs 26 times in the Bible. As you already know, that is 2 x 13.
Genesis 19:13
For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it.
Here we find the Angels telling Lot that they have been sent by the LORD to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah "because the cry of them (the "wicked sinners" of 13:13.) had waxen great before the LORD."
We have seen that not only is the "sin" wicked, but it is an act of rebellion against God's law of morality, and proper relationships between "same" sexes. [Opinions to the contrary are as important as discovering you have a sewer in your backyard.]
Exodus 13:13
And every fistling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb; and if thou wilt not redeem it, then thou shalt break his neck: and all the firstborn of man among thy children shalt thou redeem.
The ass's colt, when born, is a picture of every man's birth. See Job 11:12. Man is born a sinner! The LORD says, that this new ass needs a "redeemer".
If you cannot redeem him, kill him! See, man without a redeemer is headed for the second death,! (Revelation 20:15) No hope without a redeemer. AMEN, AMEN!!!
Leviticus 13
It is quite obvious that I cannot print the entire thirteenth chapter of Leviticus because of space. This entire chapter deals with leprosy and the leper. No one need tell you what leprosy represents. Those who had leprosy were considered "unclean."
They had to live "away" from society. They were outcasts. There is nothing GOOD to be said of leprosy. Oh, just a passing thought here. The word leprosy occurs 39 times in the Bible! Sure, it's just a coincidence!
Leviticus 6:13
The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out.
The brazen altar is a picture of the "eternal flame." NO, not the one the Roman Catholic church burns, rather the one God started eons ago as a place for the Devil and his angels. (Matthew 25:41) This fire is an everlasting flame that shall NEVER be quenched. (Mark 9:43-48)
Leviticus 20:13
If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. We will need to connect this verse with Genesis 13:13 and 19:13 for a starter. No matter what the queer, perverted preachers, teachers, etc., tell you, the act of sodomy is wicked, sinful, and hated by God. No one was born this way, they were "converted" by the wicked.
Deuteronomy 13:13
Certain men, the children of Belial, are gone out from among you, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known.
First occurrence of the word "Belial." This word means "worthless, reckless or lawless". It is usually attached to the word man or son, thus meaning "son of the lawless or worthless person." Remember, this is the FIRST occurrence, thus establishing the general meaning of the word. Cf. with Judges 20:13; I Kings 21:13.
Deuteronomy 27:13
And these shall stand upon mount Ebal to curse; Reuben, Gad, and Asher, and Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.
I don't believe much explanation is necessary here. Israel had two mountains where they received a testimony from God. Mount Gerizim (vs. 12) for the blessing and Mount Ebal for the "curse". This is told to you in 18 words.
I Samuel 13:13
And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.
The Only real significant thing here is the fact that Saul has just been told that God is going to take his kingdom from him because of his disobedience and rebellion. (15:23) God took it and gave it to David.
II Samuel 12:13
And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.
This is the confession of King David for the sin of adultery. Perhaps this is another of those "13's" where it is of neutral status, since the LORD nullified the death penalty against David.
I Kings 13
Whole chapter deals with a disobedient prophet of God who is killed by a lion. In verse "26" he is found dead with the lion standing beside him. Notice that the lion didn't eat him, he just slew him. Can't miss I Peter 5:8.
I Chronicles 10:13
So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to inquire of it.
Here is the record of the Death of Saul which contains information about his rebellion against the word of the LORD and his counsel from a witch. It contains 39 words.
I Chronicles 13
In the 13th book of the Bible we find a whole chapter dealing with David moving the ark of God improperly. When something goes wrong Uzza attempts to catch the ark, to keep it from falling, and God kills him for touching the ark. [See Exodus 25:14,15 with this chapter as to the proper method in which the ark was to be moved.]
II Chronicles 9:13
Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred and threescore and six talents of gold.
While Solomon is generally considered a type of Christ in his reign, here is an indication of an anti-type. 666 talents of gold came his way in one year. Further study of this chapter reveal that the ivory throne of Solomons had 6 steps (vs. 18) and there were 12 lions on the steps (vs. 19). That is another combination of 666.
II Chronicles 15:13
That whosoever would not seek the LORD God of Israel should be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman.
Not much here except that folks were being put to "death" for not worshiping, or seeking the LORD.
Ezra 2:13
The children of Adonikam, six hundred sixty and six.
Here is one of those "coincidences" that all the fundamental brethren speak about. The name Adonikam, according to Benjamin Davidson's Hebrew Lexicon, means lord of the enemy. This man's family numbers 666 at this location!
Esther 3:13
And the letters were sent by posts into all the king's provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to take the spoil of them for a prey.
At this verse thirteen we have a death sentence being issued upon the 13th day of the month. By the way, this degree was issued on the 13th day of the first month (vs. 12) by Haman, who is a type of the anti-Christ.
Job 24:13
They are of those that rebel against the light; they know not the ways thereof, nor abide in the paths thereof.
Considering that rebellion is connected to the number 13 it should be no surprise that the word "rebel" is located in this thirteenth verse. It just happens to be the 6th word.
Psalm 10:13
Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God? he hath said in his heart, Thou wilt not require it.
The wicked are scorning and thinking contemptible of God in this 13th verse.
Psalm 22:13
They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.
A verse 13 referring to the crucifixion of Christ.
Psalm 55:13
But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.
This Messianic Psalm speaks of the traitorous actions of Judas who sold out the Lord.
Proverbs 6:13
He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers.
There is no doubt that this is a reference to the anti-Christ in this "6th" chapter of Proverbs.
Proverbs 8:13
The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
A description of the things that the LORD "hates" which we ought to "hate" in this 13th verse.
Proverbs 13:13
Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.
People who "despise" the word of God are setting themselves up for destruction. Why should it be so strange that this warning should come at any other place than a thirteenth chapter, much less a thirteenth verse?
Isaiah 1:13
Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meetings.
In this 13th verse, the LORD is refusing the idolatrous offerings of this backslidden nation.
Isaiah 13:13
Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.
In this 13th chapter and this 13th verse we have a reference to the "anger" of the LORD and the terribleness of the second advent.
Jeremiah 2:13
For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold not water.
Just a reference to two "evils" that Israel had committed against the LORD.
Lamentations 3:13
He hath caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins.
Obviously if you know what the book of Lamentations is all about you can understand this reference to the "arrows" of God afflicting His people in the tribulation. This verse contains 13 words.
Ezekiel 13:13
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; I will even rend it with a stormy wind in my fury; and there shall be an overflowing shower in mine anger, and great hailstones in my fury to consume it.
Another reference to the anger and fury of the LORD against His people.
Ezekiel 23:13
Then I saw that she was defiled, that they took both one way.
There are 13 words in this verse describing the defilement of the Holy city, Jerusalem.
Hosea 2:13
And I will visit upon her the days of Baalim, wherein she burned incense to them, and she decked herself with her errings and her jewels, and she went after her lovers, and forgat me, saith the LORD.
This verse describes the wickedness and adultery that had been committed by Israel against God.
Zehariah 13:3
And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of the LORD: and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth.
No prophesying in the millennium and if one does he is to be killed by his parents!! [Oh, no! A new doctrine! Heresy, heresy!!]
New Testament
Matthew 13:19
When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.
First time the phrase "the wicked one" occurs and it only occurs five more times.
Matthew 13:39
The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.
What do we find at the 39th verse (3 x 13) of Matthew 13? The devil, our enemy, who has sown bad seed in the field.
Luke 13:16
And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?
A woman, bound by Satan for eighteen years. That is 6x6x6 or 666. Yes sir, just a coincidence. Just as a passing thought, Have you ever considered the word Satan? Rearrange the letters and you have Santa!
John 13:26
Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
One more time we find a reference to the devil, by way of type. (See John 6:71) in a thirteenth chapter with a verse that is multiplied by 13. Judas has, as discovered previously, 13 letters in his name. I didn't come up with the following, but it is an interesting note.
The word "sop" could certainly stand for "son of perdition" which is who Judas turns out to be. (John 17:12) isn't this King James Bible an interesting book! Why did I say that? Do you know what the NIV (HIV) perversion does? It changes the word "sop" to "bread" thus removing a "hidden" implication to Judas. Don't tell me that the NIV is not Satan's Bible.
Another thought in passing concerning Judas. An evangelist friend of mine (Harold Leake) brought this to my attention. In each list of the apostles, Judas is the twelfth. However, Hebrews 3:1 tells us that Jesus as "the Apostle" making Him number "one" and Judas, by the count of apostles in order, is number, right Ä thirteen.
John 13:27
And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.
Notice in this verse, Satan is mentioned entering a man and he does it in a sentence of 18 words. That phrase, "Satan entered" is NOT used anywhere else in the Bible. Too much for you?
Acts 13:10
And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?
This verse is peter talking to Elymas the sorcerer. The word subtlety can certainly be cross referenced to Genesis 3:1. If that won't do, then notice that he does call him a child of the devil. This man is an enemy (as Adonikim) of righteousness and a perverter of what is right.
Romans 9:13
As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.
It's quite clear that this verse could be taken either way, good or bad. Some might even consider it "neutral". There are 13 words that make up this verse, and it's quite obvious that the 13th word is the word "hated" (Malachi 1:2,3). God didn't hate him for who he was, just WHAT he was. See Hebrews 12:16 to see his character.
Romans 13:13
Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
Notice that there are six wicked acts that are not to be committed by the saints. While this verse could be consider neutral because it is advising to walk honestly, it certainly has a bad connotation to it.
Galatians 3:13
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree.
Here's a unique one. The chapter and verse reference multiplied together equals 39. The verse has 39 words and it deals with a curse. The last word in our Old Testament is this word. [See comments at Malachi 4:6.]
Hebrews 13:13
Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach.
This verse is negative in its advice! Certainly! How many Christians do you know willing to suffer reproach for ANYTHING much less Christ? By the way, this advice is in the 13th chapter and the 13th verse with 13 words. (Yes, yes I know, it's just the way it happened to fall. Just "coincidence", right? Strange that you'd believe in "coincidence" but not in the divine direction of the Holy Spirit!)
Revelation 13:18
Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
No comment necessary! The number of a man is found here to be 666 in the 18th verse (6x6x6) of the 13th chapter.
A Look At The NOT
So Obvious
While many things are quite obvious concerning the number 13, there are a number of things that are not so obvious.
Now, that doesn't mean we have to invent meanings, it simply means that when we apply the facts we've learn to things revealed from deeper study it often yields some interesting truths.
I understand that some of these things will be "ho hum" to whose who know all these things, but to many it may well be the first time you've ever come across some of these facts.
As has been previously stated, the following is not stated to prove I'm correct. It is simply shown for what it is with hope that it might spur you on to further study or add to what you've already learned. I have been known to be incorrect, and so have YOU!
I do not suspect that God expects us to get all these facts, nor do some of them actually matter as far as eternity is concerned. However, the knowledge of them has often caused a person to do further research in other areas which have been beneficial to all of us. Let's trust that this might be the result of the preceding as well as the following materials.
Old Testament
Genesis 10:8,9
(8) And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth. (9) He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD.
Nimrod, by genealogy, is the 13th from Adam. Here's the list as found in I Chronicles 1:1-10. Adam - Cain - Enos - Cainan - Mahalaleel - Jared - Enoch - Methuselah - Lamech - Noah - Ham - Cush - Nimrod.
The two parts of his name, in Hebrew, mean, "spotted leopard" and "rebel." [For a full report on Nimrod read the work of Alexander Hislop entitled The Two Babylons.]
Numbers 13:13
Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael.
While this verse does not appear to have any bad or good connotations in it, one must sometimes dig a bit. As in the Greek, so with the Hebrew, the letters of the alphabet have numerical values as well. In the Hebrew, the numerical value of the name of Asher equals, 666.
Deuteronomy 25:3
Forty stripes he may give him, and not exceed: lest, if he should exceed, and beat him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should seem vile unto thee. The Jewish law allowed a man to give another 40 strips as a punishment. However, so that they did not seem hateful (vile) in this punishment, the Jews would only whip a man with 39 stripes. In II Corinthians 11:24 Paul says that he received 39 stripes five times. Certainly by now I don't need to tell you the two numbers multiplied together to get 39.
I Chronicles 21:1
And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.
It probably doesn't really mean anything, but the first time the word Satan appears in the Bible is in the 13th book of the Bible. However, the very next time it occurs, it is found in the 6th verse of the first chapter of the 18th book of the Bible, Job.
Isaiah 13:1
The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see.
This is the first mention of Babylon in the book of Isaiah. It is no strange thing that it should occur in the thirteenth chapter of this book.
By the way, this city is mentioned just 12 more times in this book for a total, right, 13 times. Babylon, as you know, is connected with Rome, the anti-Christ, wickedness, drugs, sex, perversion, drunkenness, godlessness, idolatry, and such like.
Daniel 3:1,5
(3) Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon. (5) That at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up.
At the beginning I told you that the numbers 6 and 18 would be connected to the number 13. Nebuchadnezzar, a type of the anti-Christ, sets up an image and forces all to worship it. (Revelation 13:14-15) Notice that this image is 60 x 6 cubits (90 feet tall by 9 feet wide.)
It must be cylinderal in shape since only two dimensions are given. Thus we have two "6's". However, the third "6" comes in verse 5 where we have a 6 piece band playing the (rock) music that is used in this "false" worship. I'm not sure of the connection, but the plain in verse 1 is named Dura and the word means "circle."
Malachi 4:6
And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
This book is the "39th" book of the Bible. It ends the book as well as the Old Testament with the word curse. Compare this with Galatians 3:13 and comments.
New Testament
Matthew 26:6
Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper.
There may not be anything here to many, but consider the following. It is the 26th chapter, that's 2 x 13. It is the 6th verse, of which we said 6 would be connected to 13. Then, the verse contains 13 words and it's about a leper. The statement, "Simon the leper" contains 13 letters! [See notes on Leviticus 13.]
Mark 7:21,22
(21) For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, (22) Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.
It probably doesn't mean much to most but there are 13 things in this list that are said, in verse 23, to be evil and by which a man is defiled.
John 6:71
He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.
This man's name contains 13 letters and he is without question, as stated in the verse previous to this one, to be connected to the anti-christ and the Devil.
John 17:12
While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
This verse deals with the "son of perdition" and contains 39 words. While that may not seem important in itself, compare this with I Thessalonians 2:3 and Revelations 17:8. Also, see the note at Acts 1:25.
Acts 1:25
That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.
Here again is another place where there is certainly a difference of opinion or belief. The 13th word in this verse is "Judas." Notice that he goes to HIS own place. This place is without a doubt the bottomless pit. Revelation 9:11 identifies the "angel" of this place as being "Apollyon".
The word used to translate this word is the same one for the word "perdition." Matthew 27:3, which contains 18 words, tells us that Judas hanged himself. Anyone hung on a tree, according to Galatians 3:13, is cursed. [See comments at that reference.] This is no doubt a fulfillment of Psalm 109:7.
However, if that is hard for you to believe, try this one. The other name for this "angel", given in Revelation 9:11, is Abaddon which means "destruction" or "destroyer". In Exodus 12:23 we read about the "destroyer" that God was going to send across the land of Egypt on the Passover night.
Kind of makes you wonder who this "devil" (John 6:71) really is. Revelation 17:8 indicates that this "beast" who went into perdition "was", "is not" and "yet is". I don't know it all, but there's enough for you to study, get the answers and send them to me!
Revelation 12:3
And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
Nothing real strange here. Just note the word "dragon." It is without question a reference to the Devil (Satan, etc.) This word occurs 13 times in the book of Revelation.
Revelation 17:5
And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
Nothing is really obvious to the novice reader unless he takes into consideration what he may have learned about Babylon. However, if you count the words in the title on this "whore's" forehead you will find 13 words. If you count the letters in the title you will find 52 or 4 x 13. Putting together the data that you already know about this "witch" why should this information surprise you?
Appendix "A"
The Letter "X"
Keep in mind that just as 13 is not always bad neither are all the words that end in "x" given to bad meanings. Here is just a small list of words that have bad or ominous meanings.
Before going to the list consider the letter "x" itself. When used alone it implies, delete, unknown, mystery, variable, and so forth. The last generation before the end of this millennium is known as generation-x. It is used in the motion picture industry to imply that the content of the film is sexual, wicked, lewd, violent, and so forth.
When you were in school you marked an "x" for a WRONG answer. Consider the following knowing the definitions given above. Xmas; without Christ; Xi(ex) without interest; MX, used by the FCC to exclude two mutual parties who have applied for the same frequency in the same area. VX is a highly lethal nerve gas used to kill the enemy.
Certainly I could go on with the list, but I believe that you can see the implications of this letter. Now, read the following and notice how words that end in "x" can have bad, wicked, or dangerous meanings.
Some of you might remember hearing about a civil rights leader called Malcolm X. His full name was Malcolm Little (1925-65). The "X" was used to "delete," "remove," his connection to the hated white man. [Read his biography if you don't believe it. And we're the racist bigots???]
Here is just a small list of words that end in "x" and the meanings or implications made by these words.
1. Something not true or real is said to be a hoax.
2. The signature, in a letter, for a kiss is XXX... [Remember Judas!!??]
3. When a Catholic "crosses" themselves they make the sign of a crux.
4. The container the Catholic church keeps the wafer in is called a pix or pyx.
5. A crucifix is a religious "image" used by the Catholic church.
6. A pontifex is a man on the highest council of the priest in Rome.
7. The "kiss of peace" [Rome] is called a pax.
8. When something is acceptable in style and dress for both sexes it is called unisex.
9. A flirtatious and/or promiscuous woman is a minx.
10. The place you take a drunk or dopehead to "dry them out" is called a detox unit.
11. To state that a thing is nothing or is rejected is to nix it.
12. To stop an action or to fire someone is to give it/them the ax.
13. A word meaning botch or bungled up is bollix.
14. A disease of the skin that is usually contagious is a pox.
15. To annoy, irritate or trouble someone is to vex them.
16. The governmental burden of man is called tax.
17. The number of man is six.
18. To intermingle or integrate means to mix.
19. The one problem and sin that get men into more trouble is sex.
20. To have bad luck, or always have something go wrong is called a jinx.
21. The body of a lion with the head of a man, hawk or ram is called a sphinx. [Also known as an androsphinx.]
22. A lynx is an animal that resembles the cat, but howls like a wolf. He is streaked with yellow, white and black coloring!!
23. An infectious disease of wild and domesticated animals is called anthrax.
24. A person who leaves the truth for unusual beliefs and is inclined toward heresy is described as being heterodox.
25. A spell or a charm, used by a witch, is called an hex.
26. A loose, attractive, tempting woman is referred to as a fox.
27. When a dopehead is in withdrawal he wants a fix.
28. A jukebox is a music box found in a bar used for dancing. What's so strange about that? Well the word juke is a Creole word used in the south by the blacks and was brought over from West Africa. It means "bad, wicked and disorderly". Now what do you think of the word?

The 13th Amendment
On the internet you can view information about the 13th amendment at
http://odur.let.-rug.nl/~usa/E/thirteen/thirteen.htm.
You can also check
http://www.w3f.com/patriots/13/13th- 0l.html.
The researchers of this subject are given as Mr. David Dodge, Mr. Tom Dunn and a Mr. Brian
March. A library probably could locate a book or document of some sort on this subject if it interests you.
Just a note. There is a 13th Amendment to our constitution, but it is NOT the one you read about in this book. Thus, you might be led to believe that it was NEVER considered. Research will disprove that theory.
The current 13th amendment is quite interesting. I shall include it here just for your visual knowledge.
Amendment 13
Section 1.
"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."
Section 2.
"Congress shall have power by appropriate legislation to enforce the provisions of this article."
Say, does slavery still exist in this country? It would appear that congress could "enforce" it at any time!!! Notice that statement "except as punishment for a crime." Guess who can determine what a "crime" is?
